"All roads lead to Marketing"
A longtime client Mark McC reminded me this week about how he first met me. Mark says he still gets a smile on his face when he conjures up the image of me around the corner of my salon in a light rain, wearing my leather jacket, cowboy boots and hat. I was introducing myself to the community and passing out business cards. Mark said his first thought was, “I’ll give this guy a chance, he’s a hustler.” Mark taught business classes at Santa Ana College and said he shared Tim stories with his class. This isn’t the first time I stood in the rain passing out cards; 1982 with only a handful of clients and 4 months in the barber business I spent Christmas Eve passing out $5 off coupons that slightly resembled a real $5 bill; my signature marketing campaign I used for decades. I was standing in the entrance of the Gemco Retail Store, Fullerton, California. It was my first chair rental; this busy retailer was the anchor store in our shopping center. I was a little surprised by the number of people that actually stopped and wanted to talk to me about their hair, then the next big question was “are you the one that would be doing the style?” They were surprised I was personally there asking them for their business. Now here’s the clincher to the story, the manager comes up to me about 45 minutes into my marketing campaign and asks that I wrap it up. He was apologetic but firm and then he said, “before you leave, please pick up all the paper on the floor.” I turned around to witness the store’s isle full of my coupons, wet and stomped on as far as the eye could see. Was I discouraged? Heck no, I acquired 4 customers from that idea, and with my tracking has told me those 4 clients have referred to me many of their family members and friends and they continued the referral cycle, compounding the total to 20 or more people over my career. Side note, $5 off in today’s money is $16.50, and the haircut price has tripled as well. Just in my time in the business. Marketing is a numbers game, very few become loyal. Let me repeat, it’s a numbers game, few become loyal.
